Entering his Rest

Entering his Rest

January seem like yesterday to me; how time flies. I pray by the special grace of God that we shall all see the end of this year and enter the next if Jesus Christ has not returned by then.

What does it mean to Enter His Rest?

The most common definition of the word ‘rest’ in the dictionary is ‘Cease work or movement to relax, sleep or recover strength’. I am very sure most of us we dream to stop all hard work, labour and toil and just relax or rest from all hustle and bustle. How great would that have been if that is what entering God’s rest mean? We will have to wait until we get to heaven to experience that kind of rest as described in Revelation 21:3-4,

And I heard a great voice out of heave saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death; neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things have passed away”.

The above definition of ‘rest’ while the most common in the dictionary is not the only definition in the English dictionary. To rest, has also been defined as ‘to base, or to let depend, on some ground of reliance’. Rest can also be defined as a ‘place of hope, trust, or confidence on or in’.

According to Andrea Onduku in the Editorial Notes in SUNRISE, The Magazine of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, United Kingdom, Autumn 2017 Edition; “There is a rest that comes to our Spirit, Soul and Body when we place hope, trust and confidence in God, that is, when we rest’ in His promises”. So, to enter God’s rest, is to trust and depend on Him totally. It is to accept the invitation of the Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”. It will be impossible to enter his rest without accepting this great invitation.

The Lord Jesus Christ is always waiting for anyone who will accept this invitation and other invitations.  His promise is not to cast out any that will come unto Him (John 6:37).

God has promised His followers rest. Two of the things that can deny any one from entering God’s promised rest is unbelief and fear. Unbelief in the existence of God, the creator of heaven and the earth will rob anyone of this promised rest. It is ironical that many do not believe in the existence of an intelligent hand in creating this earth with its times and seasons; its natural order, beauty and harmony and yet believe that a book cannot be put together without an author or a piece of software or app without a developer (or programmer). Neither can a machinery be put together without an engineer or group of engineers. What an irony!

Let me conclude this short peace with this extract from ‘He Came To Give You Rest’ – by Pastor Modupe Afolabi, the Executive Administrator of RCCG UK, Central Office and the Editor-in-Chief of SUNRISE Magazine:

“The road to true and lasting rest for our souls is a genuine response to the self-sacrificing call of Jesus Christ, that we should cease from our ultimately fruitless attempts at finding rest out of God. We live in a fallen world; only Jesus Christ gives rest that lasts. In other words, rest is a gift, a gift from God to humanity and it comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. As with every gift from God, the way to access this blessing is to receive it with child-like faith”.

I invite you to accept God’s invitation to enter His rest with child-like faith and humility.
